Sensitivity Reading

Inclusive writing is good writing.

When your project explores identities different from your own, achieving authenticity and depth in these portrayals becomes crucial to making your narrative compelling. Sensitivity readers can be helpful partners in this process, guiding you to genuinely represent diverse experiences while steering clear of stereotypes and biases. Their insights ensure your narratives resonate with truth and respect, making your readers feel seen and valued.

How It Works

When you’re ready to have a reader review your work, getting started is simple. We recommend inquiring at least 5 weeks in advance of any deadlines to ensure you and your reader have enough time to work through the material.

Exact pricing will be confirmed after completing your request form and selecting your reader. Rates start at $0.013 per word.

Due to the skill specialization of and emotional labor required for a sensitivity read, all sensitivity reads and consultations are charged a minimum of $250 regardless of length.

You’ll start by filling out our intake form, where you can provide details about your project and share any preferences you have for a reader.

2. Book a Reader

Once we receive your inquiry, we will connect you with your preferred reader or one that we recommend based on your project. From there, you will align on a timeline and rate with your reader.

3. Review & Feedback

Once you agree on timing and rate you should receive a date to expect feedback. Feedback may come in the form of comments on the draft and/or a 1-2 page editor report giving notes on larger themes and sharing applicable resources. Check out an example of basic sensitivity reading feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about sensitivity reading? Check out our FAQs or reach out to us directly.

  • Sensitivity reading involves reviewing your manuscript for biased language, stereotypes, and authenticity in representation.

The main focus is on identifying areas where the portrayal of marginalized groups may be unintentionally harmful or inaccurate, not on editing for grammar or coherence. While sensitivity readers aim to guide writers away from mistakes, they cannot completely eliminate the risk of error.

They also assess for overused cliches and ensure cultural norms of historically marginalized communities are depicted authentically, acknowledging the diversity within these groups.

Authenticity readers is another common term for sensitivity reader.

  • A sensitivity reading is not about censorship but about enriching your writing. The role is often misunderstood, with some thinking it limits creativity or imposes restrictions. However, the goal is to highlight and address unconscious biases that might seep into your work, not to prevent you from exploring diverse characters and stories.

Think of it as a form of developmental editing focused on ensuring authentic and respectful representation. It's an additional step to enhance your project, similar to copy editing or proofreading, aimed at preventing unintended harm or misrepresentation rather than restricting your voice or ideas. Not all publishers require it, but many see the value in employing sensitivity readers to elevate the quality of a manuscript.

  • Pricing and timing for sensitivity reads vary based on project goals. The starting rate is $300, with most charges falling between $0.013 to $0.04 per word, as outlined by the Editorial Freelancers Association's recent survey. For detailed rate structures, check the EFA Rate Chart.

A 50,000-word manuscript typically requires around three weeks for a reader to provide feedback. However, availability and turnaround times can differ. For quicker feedback, ask about rush fees. It's best to request a sensitivity read at least five weeks before your desired date to ensure availability.

  • The timing of this step is flexible and depends on your preferences and goals.

You can hire a sensitivity reader to consult with you on your concept or outline before you begin the writing process. We're happy to help you think through some ideas and support your goals.

If you aim to showcase your best work from the start, especially in terms of representation, engaging a sensitivity reader before querying agents can be beneficial. In this case, you ideally should have a completed manuscript that has undergone a basic grammar check.

  • When selecting a sensitivity reader, you’ll want to confirm that they not only possess the specific identity and knowledge relevant to your project but also bring experience in writing or editing. This combination of personal insight and professional skill will ensure a comprehensive review. You can browse through our directory to find a reader who aligns with your needs.

  • Great sensitivity readers are able to deliver constructive feedback in a professional manner, with clear explanations to help writers understand and address issues.

Establishing an online presence is a great first step to allow potential clients to discover and contact you—something as straightforward as a Twitter account can suffice.

Currently, we're not accepting new readers due to a high volume of submissions.
